To put this into perspective, one micron is approximately 1/70th the diameter of a human hair, which is well below the threshold of what the naked eye can perceive. This 1-micron layer is the desired thickness for optimal performance.
How would I know I have achieved 1-micron in optimum thickness?
You won't be able to ascertain the exact thickness of 1 micron, but by following the application instructions and guidelines, you can ensure that you achieve the desired thickness and desired outcome.
